Feed Supplementation
The horse is a herbivore which means that it has evolved to survive on a diet of plants and to utilise feeds high in fibre. The natural way to feed your horse is, therefore, to mimic this natural way of feeding and to supply as many nutrients as possible from fibrous feed before adding anything else to its diet.
Feeding a fibre based diet in this way can help to avoid an excess of protein, starch and sugar and helps to maintain the natural balance of bacteria in the horse’s hindgut. Limiting excess of starch and sugar in the diet helps support a healthy digestive tract, maintains overall good health and reduces the risk of laminitis and tying up.
Minerals and vitamins are vital for horse health. If feeding a high fibre diet with little or no compound concentrate feed, then it is a good idea to supplement with a quality broad spectrum blend of vitamins, minerals and trace elements, as forage is often low in at least one micronutrient.
For General Health
The Complete Supplement from Super Codlivine is the perfect nutritional supplement for this purpose. It is based on the finest available grass meal to closely mimic the horse’s natural diet and because it also contains cod liver oil, it will give your horse a lovely glossy coat too.
For Joints
Super Codlivine - The Joint Supplement is a broad spectrum blend of vitamins, minerals and trace elements as with the Complete Supplement above, but with extra ingredients to ease stiffness and promote agility. Still containing cod liver oil, but also containing evening primrose oil, MSM and glucosamine.
For Hooves
Farrier's Formula® from Life Data Labs Inc. was developed to provide the nutrients needed for horses to build strong structural and connective tissue proteins (tendon, ligaments, bones, joints). It was developed about 30 years ago by J. Frank Gravlee.
It has always contained nutrients such as phospholipids and omega fatty acids only recently recognized as important for healthy dermal tissues. Within as little as two weeks of feeding Farrier's Formula® to your horse, you should see a more glossy and deeply coloured coat. By 9 -10 weeks a new band of strong, healthy growth should be clearly visible at the coronary band.
For Circulation
LaminTec 5-HT is an innovative equine feed supplement, that helps supports normal circulation to the hoof and its capillary bed and in doing so help prevent laminitis.
Laminitis occurs when changes in blood flow to the hooves results in intense pain and damage. There are many "triggers" for the disease, however no accepted cure making it difficult to prevent or solve. Daily supplementation of LaminTec 4-HT can help.
